Zefiria - Volcano -Agia Kiriaki
Our journey begins with Zefiria, medieval capital of the island. Cross the wide flat valley and let the labyrinth network of rural dirt roads bring you out at the entrance to a small canyon. Walking for around 700 metres, we arrive at a great stretch of land interspersed with old cedar trees on our right and then realise that the semicircular hillside to our left means that we are already inside the crater!
The landscape is not typically Cycladic and resembles the countryside of a northern euroean country. Continuing on the dirt road for a little while, we arrive at the steam vents. From here on with our backs to the east we descend towards the right plateau until we arrive at the cliff edge. We now look down upon the beach of Agia Kyriaki and with a little effort we can make out the old mule trail which we will descend until the beach. A dip in the crystal clear waters and the white pebbles on the beach make us feel rejuvenated. Roam through the traces of a Roman ceramic workshop now covered by the muddy residue from the volcano that towers above us and where we have just come from! Time now to retrace our tracks returning to the familiar plain and the village of Zefiria. It is impossible to get lost here. Make a stop to rest in the "Stone" a little traditional coffee come eating house overlooking the historic church of Our Lady Portiani, enjoy the homemade stuffed cabbage, made with loving care by Manolis' mother.
