Lagkada-Agios Ioannis Theologos-Stavros
Amorgos Natura 2000
In the north eastern section of the island there are some typical natural habitats where we find endemic species,
also on the islets of Psalida, Gramvousa, Nikouria, Mikro and Megalo Viokastro, Kramvonisi and Petalidi all under the protection of the environmental protection network.
The regions are designated by the Natura programme due to their particular flora including many endemic plants of the Cyclades also those native to Amorgos (Campanula amorgina, Erysimum senoneri ssp. Amorginum, Helichrysum amorginum) that are growing in barren soil. Also, the spectacular rocky terrain with hidden beaches in many places the scenery is absolutely breathtaking, nesting in these rocky crevices are:
Bonelli's eagles, Audouin's Gull, Eleonora and pigeons. King of the reptilian fauna of the island of Amorgos, is the Laffite (elaphe quatorlineata). Other animals one can see is the frog, a ribbed turtle, the tyflitis the Amorgiano lizard, the kyrtodachtylos etc.
The route Natura 2000 (2 1/2 hrs)
This route is within the protected area Natura 2000 north eastern Amorgos. This particular path, total length 7km, concludes at the mountain of Krikelos, the highest point on the island (820m). We begin at the stone walkway which ascends from Lagkada in the direction of Agia Varvara (reaching the church at 2km) and in the direction of the Byzantine monastery of Agios Ioannis Theologos. Passing the monastery, a sign directs us in a northernly direction to Stavro. The path ascends a little at a time and we enter this impressive route through the wild beauty of the region, over rocky cliffs (45 mins duration) reaching finally the little chapel of Stavro over the old vauxite mine.
