Castro
Castro
Prior to Apollonia today, this was the capital of Sifnos during ancient times, the middle ages and the later period. Castro differs from the other settlements on the island as its architectural rythm is purely defensive and its battlements can still be seen today. Despite the passing of time the area maintains its medieval character with narrow passages full of carved marble sarchophagi, the gatehouse where entrance was permitted to the fortification and of course the remains of the castle dominating the peak. Most homes are two or three storeyed decorated with a multitude of marble insignia.
Seralia
A visit to the charming Castro can be combined with a pleasant stroll to the church of the
Seven Martyrs and Seralia, the safe haven and port of the fortress.
