Volcano-Zesta Nera-Thirasia-Oia
Roundtrip of the caldera:
This tour is a wonderful choice for those who wish to visit all the best sightseeing spots in Santorini in one day and at the same time enjoy a day out on the sea.
You can take a boat from the harbour of Athiniou or one the traditional wooden boats departing daily from the two little ports of Oia - Ammoudi (10:15 departure) and Armeni (10:30 departure).
First stop, Megali Kameni: a little islet made of lava, where we can walk on the edge of the crater of the still active volcano.
Before we tie up the boat the huge black boulders of Daphne, the island's largest crater become visible.
Anchorage at a small dock in the gulf of Erinias. You must know that the tour is quite arduous, especially for those unfit among us.
There is an uphill path which day trippers follow up until the edge of the crater. Due to the black rock the heat of the summer sun is felt much stronger.
Nevertheless once you reach the edge of the crater (after half an hour's walk) the spectacle more than pays up for your efforts.
The majesty of this experience is the view to the cliffs of the caldera with the villages of Santorini clinging to the peaks.
Second stop, Palaia Kameni: when the circumnavigation of Nea Kameni is complete we reach the little port of Agios Nicholas.
The boat docks at the shallowest point for swimming. The sea temperature around the volcanic island reaches 35 degrees celsius.
The smell of sulphur is strong. Many visitors choose to cover their bodies with the therapeutic mud found on the shore (the smell and the colour of the stuff takes a while to get rid of). After this stop the boat continues on to the next stop, the tiny islet found opposite Santorini known as Thirasia.
Third stop, Thirasia: this islet is inhabitated and the boat docks in the small port of Korfou. You can swim here or perhaps choose to sit in one of the fish tavernas just to have an ouzo. Another idea might be to climb the many steps (or take a donkey) to reach the lovely traditional settlement of Monola.
Fourth stop, Oia: the tour finalises in the early evening the little boat makes one last stop at Oia. Here you can choose to carry on with the boat until Athinio or you might like to stay in Oia and visit the picturesque village and enjoy the famous sun-set. If you choose to stay there is a bus service which will bring you back.
