A mythical place
If you arrive by boat just before the sun sinks into the sea the deep red colour of the crater becomes so very dramatic,
the huge shadows cast upon the rocks leave us in awe of how this vast caldera was created, a massive eruption
and the ensuing sinkage of the volcanic cone into the sea gives us this mythical place.
The islets known as the "Kamenes" (scorched earth)
The unquenched and ever vibrant energy of the volcano has brought forth from the depths of the sea over the past 2000
years three islets which stand between Santorini and Thirasia. Today they are a popular boat trip destination and give
visitors a chance to get up close and personal with the volcano.

- Palaia Kameni (old scorchy) this islet has hot springs
- Nea Kameni (new) after stepping onto the islet and walking 20 minutes or so over this moonscape one discovers the crater with steam vents billowing out sulphur fumes. Also the view from here to the cliff top villages in Santorini opposite is beautiful.
- Mikri Kameni (little)
