Akrotiri
At Akrotiri beginning in 1967 a whole Minoan coastal city has been steadily exposed. Initially excavated by the late Greek archaeologist Professor Spyros Marinatos, a sophisticated city with roads, town squares, two-storey buildings, workshops and more has been unearthed. Wonderful wall frescos of high artistic value with original and unusual themes grace the homes of Akrotiri. Utensils and tools made of stone, clay and metal, have been discovered in their hundreds indicating the wealth and height of achievement reached by the inhabitants.
When the site reopens to the public visitors will once again walk the streets of Akrotiri taking in the history at every step whilst archaelogists carry on the excavation. The wall paintings due to their significance and fragility have been removed and are on view at the Petros Nomikos Conference Centre.
