Panagia tou Kipou
History
It is worth paying a visit to the southern coast of Milos and the oldest church on the island, the church of the Lady of the Garden (Panagia tou Kipou).
Built in the Byzantine times, perhaps dating from the 5th century AD. Only one of the original two domes is remaining. Supporting beams from an earlier period of construction lead us to believe in the existence of a larger Byzantine temple, perhaps a monastery.
Today it is a small chapel maintained by offerings. Nearby there are cells and a little further along a small fountain with a trickle of fresh water from the mountain.
The church celebrates its name sake on the day of "The Assumption of the Virgin.
Inside the church
Inside the western wall we find a large sarcophagos from the Hellenistic period built into the wall and decorated with both Christian and older (national)
symbols. Inside the holy alter we find a historicaly significant baptismal font in the shape of the cross.
