Beaches
Milos, the island of 100 beaches!
It sounds wonderful doesn't it, the truth is there are only 77! The most awesome element is that they are very diverse, both in terms of topography and the nature of the seabed. Interesting shapes, coloured rocks, pebbles, sandy strands, crystal clear water are all nature's ornaments changing hands at amazingly seductive beaches, these variations make the island Queen of Beaches in the Aegean.
The Thessalonikians
The wonderful beaches of Milos were first discovered by Athenian holiday makers, when at the beginning of the 90's they had the chance to travel to Milos on the new faster ferry boats for week-end breaks. But how did the people from the north of Greece get from one end of the country to the other, these waves of Salonikians making journeys often having a long duration with no direct flight or ship service. The answer is easy, the Thessalonikians are devotees of the "dolce vita" in all aspects of their lives, whether it be food, entertainment, love, holidays and love of their homeland. They are although strong regionalists. Their summers are spent on the famous beaches of Chalkidiki, therefore which beaches could possibly compete with the beauty of their own. With this thought in mind they were drawn to Milos and loved it!
Word of mouth
Thus by word of mouth, slowly but surely and without advertising campaigns, the beaches of Milos became known all over Greece making the island a much loved destination for Greek people. With the passing of time, naturally, European visitors and in particular Italians have perhaps come to love Milos even more than the Greeks! Further afield the beaches of Milos have become a beloved back-drop for Indian movies and American commercials.
The big difference
The big difference, and what makes the beaches stand out, is due to the turbulent, multi-phase geological evolutionary history of a volcanic island that left a legacy in this seductive and diverse landscape. The best way to admire the 125 km coastline is by taking one of the daily sea tours around the island, the most stunning sea tour in all of Greece and perhaps the Mediterranean! Of course we cannot neglect the beauty of the other volcanic islands in the island complex of Milos, they are Kimolos, Antimilos and Poliaigos. The last in this list, if Milos did not have such amazing locations, would have been enough to attract visitors to the region.
