This seaside settlement, with the only pine forest on the island, took its name from the church in which was preserved the miraculous icon of Our Lady, a fine example of post-Byzantine art painted by the Cretan iconographer, Emmanoyil Skordilis, when he left Crete and took refuge on the island in the 17th century.
