Monachus Monachus Seal
The Mediterranean monk seal's inhabitance of these shores proves just how healthy the marine environment is and the seal is an important part of the rich biodiversity of Greece. As long as the monk seal is in the Greek waters, we can be sure they are among the healthiest and cleanest in the world! Included in the IUCN (International Organization for Conservation of Nature) Red List of endangered species. The largest population is in the Greek waters, estimated to be about 250 to 300 seals. Much of this population (roughly 43) now live in the conceived triangle between the islands of Kimolos, Milos and Kythnos which has been proposed as a marine park. During summer the volunteers from the organisation MOM (charity for protection of the monk seals) operate a meeting house where visitors can learn about marine ecosystems of the area, view videos and help the action by buying t-shirts, badges, and so on.
