Panagia - Church of Our Lady
The Church of Our Lady (Assumption) rises above the Chora with her steps in zigzag fashion, absolute trademark of Folegandros, which is found on all the posters and postcards. A 20 minute walk separates the Punta Square of the Chora from the Church forecourt, with its beautiful view. It’s not only the building, with its unique dome that attracts those who make the effort to climb up, but also the interior of the church. Dedicated to a miracle believed to have taken place in medieval times involving the raising of a storm and sinking of a pirate ship intent on the plunder and destruction of Folegandros. During Easter celebrations the miracle working icon is paraded though the streets visiting each home on the island.
