Chrysospilia

Chrysospilia is in the Faraggi area. A cave of great archaeological importance in the north-east of Folegandros. Almost inaccessible to visitors from the road (hidden path through the gorge) and from the sea (30 meters above sea level) and not developed so far (a special permit is required to visit). On its walls and its ceiling have been written the ancient names of about 400 young men and women that probably came from all over Greece (4th century BC) to participate in special ritual ceremonies of initiation. Significant Names: Lysikratis, Kallis, Polyklis, Efklis, Nikagoras, Evdamos, Vryketas, Rafpon, Permalos, etc.. It is said that the cave's name comes from the precious gems (jewelry, gold, silverware, etc.) that the people of Folegandros hid in the cave to avoid them falling into the hands of pirates. Its thought by locals that the cave is so huge that perhaps all of the mountain may be hollow, legend says it may reach the Church of Our Lady above.
For the technical side you can learn more from the experts (the Greek Speleologists Club).
