Suggestions (if you are a couple) for a week-end in Athens
The period from September until April is thought by most to be the best time to visit Athens, the city that never sleeps.
Friday evening: After checking-in at your hotel have a stroll through one of the oldest neighbourhoods on the planet, Plaka.
Admire the Acropolis lit-up at night whilst getting into the Athenian mood.
Friday night: If you are getting hungry the much loved "Fisherman's Taverna" (taverna tou psara) will satisfy your hunger pangs. Traditional, home-cooked food, a low key beginning to the Plaka experience.
Friday just before midnight: Athens awakens, it shouldn't even cross your mind to return to the hotel now. Behind Monastiraki Square and crossing Ermou Street you find yourself in the region known as Psiri. The Soho of Athens. This used to be a working-class neighbourhood famous for its houses of ill-repute (bordela).
Today it plays host to restaurants, bars, cafes, antique stores and galleries setting the new wave. For electronic, jazz, funk and soul music check out "Mooi".
Friday a little after 2 am: Let your hair down dancing at "Venue"
Saturday morning: Head for Kolonaki, the posher side of town, for shopping. After spending time admiring the beautiful shops drop in for a coffee at the famous cafe in Tsakalof Street, Da Capo (get yourself a freddo, no frappe available - its self service). If you can't get a table here try the next street down at the "Pritaneion".
Saturday midday: With the air of a French bistro, the ultimate place to be for the last three decades in the centre of Athenian life is "Ratka".
Time for a nap at back at the hotel but before you do book your table for the evening at "48".
Saturday afternoon: Take a ride on the telepherique up to Licabetus and enjoy an aperitif at the famous "Orizontes" whilst watching the sun set over the city.
Descend on foot taking in the freshness that the hill exudes.
Saturday night: Take a cab to "48" from Syntagma it will not take more than 15 minutes to get there. Ask the driver to take you to Syngrou Avenue to just one
of its many nightclubs. Alternatively you can go to the region of Gazi. Get ready to see the customers dance on the tables, many will shower their favourite singer with baskets of carnations and the drinks just keep on coming. With the right company it will be a night to remember!
Sunday 11 am: Time to get up. Apart from the souvenir shops in Plaka, the stores are closed. This is a good time for a little culture.
The top choices are the Acropolis and the The New Acropolis Museum. The stroll along the paved road of Dionysiou Aeropagitou just under the Acropolis
is a very pleasurable one. In between the Acropolis and the new museum make a stop for coffee at "Dionyso" with a view to the Parthenon.
If you have already visited the Acropolis an alternative is the Benaki Museum and also the Museum of Cycladic Art."
Sunday 3 pm: Fresh seafood and ouzo at Mikrolimano is the order of the day, a must.
Sunday evening: Make a late check-out from your hotel. Take your luggage, pay your hotel bill by credit card. If you have run out of cash, forget the taxi and take
the Express line from the Syntagma Metro Station to the airport. The trip lasts 40 minutes and costs 6 euros.
If you return again in summer, the best choices are here
